The Dark Pictures series has the aspiration to be an engaging horror movie-videogame hybrid, with groundbreaking facial expressions, but then reality hits: the gameplay is close to nonexistent, you walk through hallways looking for lore pieces and sometimes click a button for a QTE the faces of the characters are good but not good enough to get out of uncanny valley and justify playing the game over watching a movie and finally, the story, the writing, the characters, they're all bad. Once you play Until Dawn you've basically played all of them.

I also get the feeling that these games are visual novels, with state-of-the-art graphics and famous actors, but without much more substance. I haven't tried Little Hope or House of Ashes, but I don't know if it makes sense to play it by yourself or at least it's enjoyable with friends, are they worth it? The Quarry (apparently, they're getting rid of the Dark Pictures name) looks at least more interesting in their setting and tone. Also, the gameplay had a weird structure, with moments of pausing between selecting options, options that felt like they went nowhere. The characters seemed very flat to me, the setting wasn't very interesting and the graphics had a bit of uncanny valley, not so much as to be annoying, but enough to make me chuckle.
